Configure the VPN
Ensure that UDP port 1194 (OpenVPN server) is open on corporate and any host-based (Windows) firewalls, and configure the firewalls to allow communication.
Set up VPN for the Double-Take Cloud repository (target)
- Login to the Double-Take Cloud repository using a Remote Desktop Connection.
- Double-click the “TARGET-VPN” shortcut on the desktop. This will set up the Double-Take Cloud repository VPN, enable the SSL certification/key and OpenVPN configuration files, and start the OpenVPN service.
Generate source VPN certificates and configuration files
- Login to the Double-Take Cloud repository using a Remote Desktop Connection.
- Double-click the “SOURCE-VPN” shortcut on desktop.
- When prompted, enter the name of your source machine.
- A folder with a zip file will open. Using a secure channel, copy the “source server.zip” file to your source machine. You will use this zip file when you set up the VPN for the source machine.
- To generate server configuration files for additional source machines, rerun “SOURCE-VPN”, entering the name of the next source machine when prompted, then use a secure channel to copy each zip file to its related source machine.
Set up VPN for the source machine
- Copy the installation file for OpenVPN 2.1.1 from the Double-Take Cloud repository to your source. The installation file can be found on the repository server at C:\Installation sources\OpenVPN\openvpn-2.1.1-install.exe
- Install OpenVPN 2.1.1 on each source server.
Note: |
You can ignore the warning that the TAP-win32 adapter is not Windows Logo tested. |
- Extract the “source server.zip” file to the <Program Files>\OpenVPN\config folder.
Note: |
On a 64-bit operating system, the path is <Program Files x86>\OpenVPN\config |
- Using the Windows services applet, start the OpenVPN service and set the startup type to Automatic.
Next step: Allow a few minutes for the VPN connection to be established. Then, verify your VPN connection.
