Configuring the VPN
This process allows you to create a VPN to ensure your data is protected when being transmitted to the cloud.
- Verify that you have opened port 1194 for UDP communications.
- Login to the backup repository server, if you are not already, by using remote desktop.
- Double-click the TARGET-VPN shortcut on the desktop, which will automatically complete the following tasks.
- Set up the VPN on the backup repository server
- Enable the SSL certification/key and OpenVPN configurations files
- Start the OpenVPN service
- Double-click the SOURCE-VPN shortcut on the desktop.
- When prompted, enter the name of your source machine.
- A window containing a zip file will open. Using a secure channel, like a remote desktop redirected local drive, copy the source_server.zip file to your source and close the window. You will use this zip file when you set up the VPN for the source server.
- If you need to generate server configuration files for additional source servers, run SOURCE-VPN again, entering the name of each source when prompted. Using secure channels, copy each zip file to its related source server.
- Copy the OpenVPN installation file from the backup repository server to each source server. The file is C:\Installation sources\OpenVPN\openvpn-2.1.1-install.exe.
- Run the OpenVPN installation file on each source. You can disregard the warning that the TAP-win32 adapter is not Windows Logo tested.
- On each source, extract the source_server.zip file to the \Program Files\OpenVPN\config folder. If you are using a 64-bit operating system, the path will be \Program Files (x86)\OpenVPN\config.
- Using the Windows Services applet, start the OpenVPN service and set the startup type to Automatic.
-
Verify that your VPN connection is working. If it is not working, you will not be able to proceed.
- Allow a few minutes for the VPN connection to be established.
- From a command prompt on the source server, run the ipconfig command. This will list a new network adapter with an IP address within the range of 10.8.0.0/24.
- From the source server, ping the backup repository server IP address, which is 10.8.0.1.
- From the target, ping the source by hostname.
If any of the commands fail to return an expected response, you will need to troubleshoot your VPN connection.
Next step
After you are sure that your VPN connections are working and that all commands have returned expected responses, install Double-Take Backup on your source.
