Enabling Flex Client access to target

Whether you’ve installed the Microsoft iSCSI software initiator or you are using the software initiator that is already installed on Windows Server 2008, Vista or Win7, you may need to modify or verify a few initiator settings.

Configuring the node name on SAN target to match initiator name

If required by your iSCSI target vendor, configure the initiator node name of the boot volume that you created on the SAN to match the initiator name of the Double-Take Flex Client. The following screens show an example using the LeftHand Networks Centralized Management Console and Microsoft iSCSI initiator.

Configuring iSCSI initiator properties

To configure iSCSI initiator properties, launch the initiator applet. (Microsoft or Double-Take Flex iSCSI Initiator Properties).

  1. On the Discovery tab, add the iSCSI target vendor.
  2. On the Targets tab, log in to the iSCSI target indicated in the previous step.
  1. Launch the Double-Take Flex iSCSI Initiator Control Panel applet.
  2. Confirm the connection to the intended iSCSI target.

If copying boot volumes (partitions)

Note:

Perform this task if you are copying the boot volumes (partition). Skip this step if copying the entire disk.

  1. Open the Disk Management MMC.
  2. Select Start, right-click My Computer, then click Manage.

The Computer Management MMC opens.

  1. Under the Storage icon, click Disk Management, or click Start, Run, type diskmgmt.msc, then click OK.

  1. Right-click the portion of the line that contains Disk 1 (the grey label where you see the red caution symbol), and select the option to write a signature.
  2. After the signature is written to the disk, right-click the right side (currently indicating "unallocated") and select the option Create Partition.

This will start a wizard to guide you through the process of initializing the disk.

  1. Proceed with the wizard.

When prompted to set the partition type, choose Primary Partition. You can format the disk now or later via the Double-Take Flex System Copy tool. Whether or not you format the drive now, it will get formatted again later during the system copy.

  1. Mark this partition as active and exit the Disk Management MMC.

Note:

If you fail to mark the iSCSI partition as active, the Double-Take Flex Client will not be able to boot from this volume after the system copy.
