Configuring Double-Take Backup full-server protection

This section explains the basic steps to use Double-Take Backup to protect a server.

If you need more information about setting up protection with Double-Take Backup, see the Double-Take Backup User's Guide.

  1. Click here to sign in to the AWS Management Console.
  2. Attach the EBS volume to the Double-Take Cloud repository. This volume will serve as the image target disk.
Note: If it seems like it's taking a long time to attach the EBS volume, click the Refresh button on the AWS Management Console.
  1. Using RDC, login to the Double-Take Cloud repository.
  2. Format the EBS volume as NTFS and mount the EBS volume using the Windows disk management tool.
Note: For Windows 2008, you may need to bring the disk online before it can be formatted and mounted.
  1. On the Double-Take Cloud repository, open the Double-Take Backup Console.
  1. From the list of tasks in the left pane, select Protect.
  2. Identify the source server that you want to protect, making sure to enter the name of the source server.
  3. Identify the repository server that will store the source data or the image of the entire source, making sure to enter the IP address (10.8.0.1) for the Double-Take Cloud repository.
  4. Select the data you want to protect.
Note: Double-Take Backup is a full-server protection solution; as such, the system state of the source server is protected by default. You can add or remove protection of other data.
  1. If you would like to take snapshots of your source images on a scheduled basis, enable snapshots and set your snapshot interval. Snapshots will allow you to recover images from prior points in time.
Note: The Continuous Data Protection feature is not available with the Double-Take Cloud solution.
  1. Select the location on the repository server to store an image of the source server. Make sure to select the EBS volume that you configured in Step 4.
  1. On the summary screen, change the Route under Data transmission to 10.8.0.1.
  2. (Optional) From the summary screen, you can set compression levels, bandwidth limiting rules, and configure email notification.
Note: Medium compression is recommended.
  1. Click Finish. The Double-Take Backup Console will return you to the monitoring screen while the job is being created.

Finished with protection! Your data is now being protected in real time, and you can use the Double-Take Backup Console to monitor protection status.

After your server is protected, it is available for you to later recover an image to the cloud and make it available for production. You can perform either a test recovery or live recovery.
