Configuring Double-Take Backup full-server protection

This process establishes protection from your source server to the backup repository server in the cloud. For detailed information on setting up protection, see the Double-Take Backup User's Guide.

  1. Login to the backup repository server, if you are not already, by using remote desktop.
  2. Format the disk(s) that you added to the repository server as NTFS and mount the disk(s) using the Windows Disk Management tool.

Note:  If you are using Windows 2008, you may need to bring the disk(s) online before they can be formatted and mounted.

  3. On the backup repository server, open the Double-Take Backup console by selecting Start, Programs, Double-Take, Backup, Double-Take Backup Console.
  4. Click Protect in the left navigation pane.
  5. Identify the source server that you want to protect and click Next to continue.
  6. Identify the repository server that will store the copy of the source by entering the IP address 10.8.0.1 for the backup repository server. Click Next to continue.
  7. On the Choose data to protect page, select Protect system state. This option protects the entire source, including the system state, which is the server's operating system and configured applications. If you select this option, you will be able to recover the entire source server. Click Next to continue.
  8. If you would like to take snapshots of your source images on a scheduled basis, enable snapshots and set your snapshot interval. Snapshots will allow you to recover images from prior points in time. Click Next to continue.

Note:  The Continuous Data Protection feature is not available with the Double-Take Cloud solution.

  9. Select the location on the backup repository server to store the image of the source server. This should be the disk(s) that you configured in step 2 above. Click Next to continue.
  10. Specify if you want to delete orphan files. An orphan file is a file that exists in the repository server's copy of the source data, but the file does not exist on the source. An orphan file can be created when a job is stopped and a file is deleted on the source. Because of the stopped job, the delete operation does not get replicated to the repository server. Click Next to continue.
  11. On the Protection summary page, change the Route under Data transmission to 10.8.0.1. You may also want to set compression to medium, which is the recommended setting. If desired, you can also set any of the other, optional configuration settings.

Note:  If you configure e-mail notification from the backup repository server, specify the Mail Server as cms.doubletake.com and the From Address as CloudTarget@your_domain.com, where your_domain is the name of your domain.

  12. Click Finish to establish your protection. The Monitor jobs page will automatically appear with the new job. See the Double-Take Backup User's Guide for complete details on monitoring your job.
  13. If necessary, complete these steps again to protect any additional source servers to the backup repository server.

Once your backup protection is established, your data is being protected in real-time. In the event of a source failure, you can recover from the data stored on the backup repository server.
