Missing or unstable network connection

It has been observed post recovery that while networking continues to function, the Network Connection icons are missing and services (such as RPC) may be unstable. A common response to this behavior is to uninstall the network adapter, restart the computer, and let the system automatically detect and install the network adapter drivers. Do NOT uninstall the network adapter as you will most likely lose connectivity to your EC2 instance and will need to terminate it. Use the following procedure to restore missing or unstable network connections post recovery.

WARNING: Editing the registry incorrectly can cause problems with the operating system; therefore, it is recommended that you use caution when removing registry keys and values. You may want to save or export your registry keys to another file so that you can restore your registry if needed.
  1. Open the Windows registry and locate the following:

HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network

  1. Delete the Config entry.
Note: Do NOT delete the Network subkey. The Config entry will be reconstructed when you restart the computer.
  1. Click Start, Control Panel to open the Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Network Connections and verify that the missing Network Connection icon is now visible (press F5 to refresh).
  3. Right-click the newly-restored Network Connection icon (i.e. Local Area Connection), then select Properties.
  4. On the Properties window, make sure that the checkboxes for Network Monitor and Network Load Balancing are not selected.
  5. Select the Show icon in notification area when connected checkbox, then click OK.
  6. Restart your computer to apply the changes.
  7. When the computer has restarted, login and verify Network Connections and properties.
  8. You can now edit as required any DNS settings, WINS settings, or other settings.
